Water Testing

Know What's in Your Water

1 in 3 Alberta wells test positive for at least one contaminant above acceptable health levels, and most contamination is invisible to the eye. The only way to know your water is safe is to test it.

Watermen provides water testing services for residential, commercial, and agricultural operations. Health Canada recommends testing your well for microbial contamination at least every 6 months. If you can't remember the last time your water was tested, now is the time.

What We Test For

Iron & Manganese

Naturally occurring minerals cause staining, bad taste, and odours in your water.

Sulfate

This contaminant can have a laxative effect at elevated concentrations and is a common concern in Alberta groundwater.

Fluoride & Arsenic

They’re naturally occurring in some Alberta aquifers at levels that can impact long-term health with prolonged exposure.

Methane Gas

Methane in some Alberta groundwater poses both health and safety risks that require prompt attention.

Nitrates

Often introduced through agricultural fertilizers or livestock waste, high nitrate levels are particularly dangerous for infants and young children.

Microbiological Contaminants

E. coli and total coliform bacteria are among the most serious threats to drinking water safety and are direct indicators of fecal contamination.

About Our Well Care & Testing Services

Health Canada recommends testing your well for microbial contamination at least every 6 months. If you can't remember the last time your water was tested, that's a good sign it's overdue. Regular testing is the only reliable way to know your water is safe for your family, animals, and operation.

Common water quality concerns in Alberta wells that Watermen test for include:

  • Microbiological contaminants such as E. coli and total coliform bacteria
  • Nitrates often left behind from agricultural fertilizers or livestock waste
  • Iron and manganese, which cause staining, foul taste, and odour
  • Sulfates which can have a laxative effect at higher concentrations
  • Fluoride and arsenic are naturally occurring in some Alberta aquifers
  • Methane gas is present in some Alberta groundwater, posing a safety risk

Shock chlorination is a treatment process that eliminates bacterial contamination in your well. You may need it if your water test has come back positive for bacteria, if you've noticed an unusual taste or odour, or as part of your routine annual maintenance. Watermen performs shock chlorination as a reactive treatment and a scheduled preventative measure.

The annual maintenance program provides routine well shocking and testing on a scheduled basis. Watermen tracks your maintenance schedule so you don't have to remember to call. Members also receive 10% off all service calls and replacement well equipment.

The Watermen Club is Watermen's annual residential service membership for acreage and remote property owners who want their water looked after year after year. Members get scheduled maintenance visits, routine shocking and testing, priority service, and 10% off all services. Ask us about membership.
